Caño Negro Wetlands Costa Rica

Cano Negro is an intense place; these wetlands in the Northern part of Costa Rica are one of the most important ones in the world. The biodiversity in Cano Negro is not a concept but a vivid reality. To see the marshland covered in white or pink when a flock of birds get scared by a Caiman, it is not usual, but a common site.

 

Where is this magic place located? In the Northern Zone of Costa Rica, close to the small village of Los Chiles in the Province of Alajuela. Caño Negro is mainly conformed by the Caño Negro Lagoon and the Rio Frio. It has an extension of 9960 Hs. Cano Negro Wild Life Refuge was declared "Wildlife Area of International Importance" in 1991. This Costa Rica ecological treasure is the natural habitat of more than 350 species of birds, as well as the emerald basilisk, iguanas, river turtles, caimans and jaguars to name a few species.

About Us In 1996 a young woman of only 27 year old, with the support of her parents opened a 10-room lodge, Her plan was to have a sport fishing lodge. Rapidly the vision change, Marina Zanirato, this young and romantic Italian girl felt in love with Caño Negro, with the wildlife and the community.  We have refocused to embrace the wide variety of opportunities for visitors to enjoy the flora and fauna and local culture of the area. Photographers, wildlife adventurers, birdwatchers of all ages will find an expression of their passion here. With the growth of activities offered, arose the need to expand our infrastructure, which now includes 42 rooms clustered in the lush tropical gardens, a large restaurant, swimming pool with bar, as well as several boats to take our guest on wetland tours.   With a focus on growth and natural development of nature projects, Caño Negro Natural Lodge has created new jobs for residents of Caño Negro, giving them new opportunities... After a concerted effort made by the administration and operation departments of Natural Lodge Cano Negro, we have been able to advance in the Sustainable Tourism Certification (CST) by reaching the level of 3 leaves.   Each leaf constitutes a new level of achievement with respect to sustainable tourism.
