27 Dec Caño Negro heart of new Unesco Biosphere Reserve

With Wetland Caño Negro, Los Chiles, north of the country, was born in September 2007 another world biosphere reserve by Unesco.
Costa Rica’s proposal was approved unanimously by representatives of 34 member states of Unesco.
A biosphere reserve is an area of ??great natural beauty where conservation of natural resources is promoted, but also rational economic use of these ecosystems
by the surrounding communities.
The new biosphere reserve called Agua y Paz, and covers 916,000 hectares including wetlands, navigable rivers, tropical rainforests and large water sources.
In the area there are important remnants of mammals such as the jaguar or the manatee.
Water and Peace is in the basin of the San Juan River and extends from the Book of the Central Volcanic Range of Costa Rica to the Indio Maiz, Nicaragua.
The book integrates the Tenorio Volcano National Park, the Miravalles Protected Zone, the National Wildlife Refuge Laguna Las Camelias, Arenal National Park and Protected Area Arenal-Monteverde.
In addition, the target area includes the National Wildlife Refuge Caño Negro, the National Wildlife Refuge mixed Maquenque and Juan Castro Blanco National Park.
In the margins of the new book include the National Wildlife Refuge Border Corridor, Forest Reserve Emergency Zone Arenal Volcano, the Arenal-Monteverde Protected Zone Area and Tenorio.
Water and Peace is the third book of this type in the country. Before they had been declared as Biosphere reserves the La Amistad International Park, Talamanca, and the Central Volcanic Cordillera.

For Peace and Water, Unesco recognizes that the area contributes to the conservation of landscapes and species, ensuring genetic variation in populations of plant and animal species.
It also highlights the fact that in that area abundant large scientific and environmental education initiatives investigations are conducted
involving neighboring communities, several private companies and non-governmental organizations.
From this declaration, the promoters of the new biosphere predict preservation of one of the most important water courses of Central America and ecosystems in the Mesoamerican region.
The study and application of Water and Peace as a biosphere reserve to Unesco was conducted by experts from the University for International Cooperation (UCI), with financial support from Unesco. He also had the support of the Tropical Science Center, the Ministry of Environment and Energy and local organizations.
